Bulldogs are one of the most popular and well-liked dog breeds in the world. Let’s take a closer look at what makes them so unique.

History

The bulldog, also known as the English bulldog, is a dog breed that was created in England centuries ago for use in the bull baiting sport. The breed is known for its wide stance, muscular low profile, and a short, wrinkled face with an underbite. The bulldog frame remained the same until the passage of the Cruelty to Animals Act in 1835, which outlawed bull baiting and other forms of animal cruelty.

Temperament / Personality

The English bulldog is a people-oriented, peace-loving breed with a sweet, gentle disposition. It is dependable and predictable making it a wonderful family pet and loving to most children. A bulldog is a happy and comical dog that enjoys entertaining a crowd. Although they generally get along well with other family pets, they can also be aggressive to unfamiliar dogs.

Health

Bulldogs aren’t the most active dogs, and it’s easy for them to become overweight. Obesity can lead to many health problems, so it’s important to keep exercise and meal portions balanced.

Bulldog owners need to be cautious to prevent their dogs from overheating by ensuring they have access to shade and water if the sun is too hot.

Exercise

Bulldogs enjoy relaxing around at their owner’s feet, but they also like to play occasionally and go for walks. Frequent exercises will help the dog to maintain its shape. For extremely hot days, it is best to spend them in front of an air conditioner because the Bulldog’s short muzzle can make breathing challenging when it’s hot and humid outside.

Nutrition

It’s important to keep the English Bulldog at a healthy weight due to its short and stocky nature. There are some dog foods on the market that are specifically designed for the English Bulldog. These breed-specific diets include specific ingredients to support gastrointestinal, joint, and skin health, and a unique dry kibble shape for easier eating.

English Bulldogs below one year should be fed high-quality puppy food while older Bulldogs should be offered high-quality senior dog food.

Training

English Bulldogs can learn new tricks and once they grasp a fundamental command, they know it by heart. It is important to give them early socialization to have a good start in life.

The best way to train English bulldogs is to start with puppy training classes to allow the owner to learn how to curb any undesirable behaviors. Start leash training your Bulldog around the age of 8 weeks and full obedience training at 4 to 6 months.

Rescue / Breeder

There are many volunteer groups whose mission is to rehab and re-home neglected, abused, and unwanted English Bulldogs.  Bulldogs make wonderful, fun-loving companions despite their health concerns and physical limitations. Visit a few breeders and spend time with puppies and adult dogs to get a better idea of what it’s like to live with these dogs if you think this might be the breed for you.
